Some parents after the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) hinted to introduce Taekwondo in private schools have said the move is a step in the wrong direction that will not improve student’s academic performance
The National Executive Director of the Private Schools Council, Enoch Kwasi Gyetuah who disclosed the new course in a social media post sighted by AcademicWeek.com said his outfit has collaborated with Ghana Taekwondo Federation.
“The Council also collaborated with the Ghana Taekwondo Federation, to introduce Taekwondo in “Private “Schools, so that our learners can be trained to develop mental alertness and self-defence skills,” Obengfo Kwasi Gyetuah said.
According to the National Director of GNACOPS, Taekwondo or the punching and kicking techniques when introduced in private schools across the country will develop mental alertness and self-defence skills in private school students.
But, some parents of private school students have called on the leadership of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) to suspend the introduction of the Korean form of martial arts in private schools nationwide.
Parents have rather suggested that the National Private Schools Council introduce relevant courses including computer coding, software creation and robotics in schools to enhance the technological skills of prospective students,
“Whilst others are doing reasoning programs like computer coding, software creation, robotics etc you people are here thinking about this. Taekwondo has been an activity for some private schools for a decade now,” Edward Asante said.
On the part of Korankye Miwasty Ebenezer, he said “why not introduce boxing instead? we observe boxing day but don’t have taekwondo day. I guess you guys should implement relevancy instead.”
“It is better than you coming back home to hear your child hasn’t returned home from school and is in the hands of some kidnappers or has been attacked. Embrace it and let your kids have these defensive skills. It might be a burden but it’s worth it,” said Samuel Oppong.
Taekwondo, Tae Kwon Do or Taekwon-Do is a Korean form of martial arts involving punching and kicking techniques, with emphasis on head-height kicks, spinning jump kicks, and fast kicking techniques.
The literal translation for tae kwon do is “kicking”, “punching”, and “the art or way of”. They are a kind of martial arts in which one attacks or defends with hands and feet anytime or anywhere, with occasional use of weapons.
