Accra, Ghana -The Gbese District Court has granted a request to extradite Frederick Kumi, the popular Ghanaian social media personality known as Abu Trica, to the United States. The ruling marks a significant turning point in a high-profile legal battle involving allegations of a massive international fraud scheme.
The Allegations: AI, Romance, and $8 Million
U.S. federal prosecutors from the Northern District of Ohio allege that Kumi was part of a sophisticated criminal network that began targeting elderly victims across the United States in 2023. According to unsealed documents, the group utilized artificial intelligence (AI) to create fake identities and cultivate online relationships with senior citizens via dating platforms and social media.
Victims were reportedly deceived into transferring money and valuables under false pretenses. The indictment further claims that Kumi facilitated the transfer of these funds-estimated to exceed $8 million-from Ohio to accomplices in Ghana and other international locations.
Legal Challenges and Defense Strategy
Kumi currently faces multiple charges, including:
* Conspiracy to commit wire fraud
* Conspiracy to commit money laundering
* Forfeiture specifications
His defence team, led by Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has vigorously challenged the legal grounds of the extradition. The defence argues that wire fraud and money laundering are not explicitly listed as extraditable offenses under the 1931 extradition treaty between Ghana and the United States. They contend that domestic laws cannot be used to retroactively expand the scope of the nearly century-old treaty.
Despite these arguments, and claims by the defense suggesting political motivation and entrapment, the court dismissed the preliminary objections.
A 15-Day Window
While the court cleared the path for his removal, the extradition is currently on hold. Kumi and his legal team have been granted 15 days to challenge the ruling. Rosemary, a lawyer for the defense, confirmed they intend to file a habeas corpus application during this window to stay the proceedings and present further arguments against his surrender.
“Extradition processes are usually very fast, but we’ve managed to delay it slightly to protect his interests,” Rosemary stated, expressing “cautious optimism” despite the recent setbacks.
Public Support and Political Appeals
The case has sparked significant public interest in Ghana. Kumi’s wife, supported by a group of friends and sympathizers, recently organized a solidarity walk appealing for his release. In videos circulating online, protesters were seen holding placards and calling on President John Mahama to intervene in the case of the businessman and entrepreneur.
Kumi remains in custody following his re-arrest by the Narcotics Control Commission earlier this year, shortly after initial charges were withdrawn and replaced with the current indictment. The legal community and the public now look to the next 15 days to see if the defence can successfully block the transfer to U.S. authorities.
