BUDAPEST, Aug. 16 — At least 12 people were killed and 10 seriously injured after a Polish bus carrying 57 pilgrims crashed in eastern Hungary early Sunday, leaving a trail of wreckage and prompting a major rescue operation.
The bus, which was carrying two drivers along with the pilgrims, was returning to Poland from the shrine of the Virgin Mary in Medjugorje, Bosnia, when it veered off a motorway near the town of Mezokeresztes at about 1 a.m., Hungarian police said.
The vehicle plunged into a ditch and overturned, according to Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar.
Survivor Helena Tluczek, from Lubenia, Poland, described the scene inside the bus as “unimaginable” after the crash.
Speaking to Reuters from her hospital bed, Tluczek said she had been speaking to a friend on the phone when the bus suddenly tipped over and rolled.
She suffered broken ribs and injuries to her shoulder and spine, as well as a head injury. Despite her injuries, she managed to pull two people from beneath the wreckage and helped rescue her sister before collapsing.
“All the seats were ripped out. People were under the seats; everyone was screaming for help,” she said.
Tluczek said the devastation inside the bus was difficult to comprehend.
“When I looked back, it was like … Mother of Jesus… It is not possible; it is unimaginable to see what it looked like inside that bus,” she said.
The injured were taken to hospitals in four nearby cities for treatment.
Images from the crash site showed the badly damaged red bus lying on its side in a ditch beside the motorway, with shattered windows, luggage and personal belongings scattered across the scene.
Authorities were investigating the cause of the crash. The bus had been travelling towards the city of Nyiregyhaza when the accident occurred.
