In a deeply personal appeal that has resonated across the country, the spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, has revealed the aging leader’s final wish: to see the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill signed into law.
Speaking on GTV on April 2, 2026, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu addressed President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to expedite the process and fulfil a key legislative expectation before the Chief Imam’s passing.
A Legacy of Conviction
The Chief Imam, a revered figure of peace and morality in Ghana, has reportedly maintained a firm stance against the bill’s subject matter. His spokesperson emphasized that the signing of the bill is not just a political act, but a matter of deep spiritual and cultural significance for the “Old Man.”
“His wish would have been that you will sign this or expedite the process before he dies,” Sheikh Shaibu stated. “He would wish that this thing is signed before he departs.”
Holding the President to His Promises
The appeal also served as a sharp reminder of the political stakes involved. Sheikh Shaibu noted that the bill was a central campaign promise of the NDC during the 2024 elections. He expressed disappointment over recent remarks suggesting the issue might no longer be a top priority for the presidency.

In a show of interfaith solidarity, Sheikh Shaibu called upon President Mahama’s own religious beliefs to guide his decision-making.
“Never step back,” Shaibu advised. “Your Christian conviction must be given the fullest of expression.”
