Renowned economist John Kwakye has strongly criticized the Minority Caucus for petitioning the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over the appointment of Dr. Johnson Asiama as Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG). Kwakye questioned the Minority’s decision, wondering why they would appeal to the IMF in the first place.
Kwakye emphasized that although the IMF has a stake in Ghana’s credit facility, this does not grant them the authority to choose the Governor of the Central Bank. He described the Minority’s actions, led by Gideon Boako, as unprofessional and immature, stating that anyone supporting this move is “mentally ill and needs medical attention immediately”.
Kwakye’s remarks were echoed by Acting Spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who assured that the government remains unperturbed by the minority’s stance on Asiama’s appointment.
Kwakye’s criticism highlights the ongoing debate surrounding the IMF’s role in Ghana’s economic decisions and the limits of their influence.
