Amnesty International has highlighted several pressing human rights concerns that the new government of Ghana, led by President John Dramani Mahama, must address.
The organization emphasizes that the government should prioritize enhancing and protecting human rights, particularly in the areas of gender equality, freedom of peaceful assembly, and the right to a healthy environment.
Key Areas for Improvement
Promoting Gender Equality: Amnesty International urges the government to increase women’s participation in the political system, aiming for 30% representation by 2026 and 50% by 2030.
The appointment of Professor Jane Agyemang as the first female vice president is a positive step, but more needs to be done to empower women.
Protecting Freedom of Peaceful Assembly: The organization calls for the government to amend the Public Order Act to protect the right to peaceful assembly and to drop charges against individuals who have protested peacefully.
Ensuring the Right to a Healthy Environment: Amnesty International emphasizes the need for the government to address environmental concerns, particularly the impact of illegal mining on the environment and communities.
Genevieve Partington, Country Director of Amnesty International Ghana, stresses that the new government must make a clear commitment to prioritizing and addressing these pressing human rights issues.
