BUDAPEST, Aug. 16<\/strong> \u2014 At least 12 people were killed and 10 seriously injured after a Polish bus carrying 57 pilgrims crashed in eastern Hungary early Sunday, leaving a trail of wreckage and prompting a major rescue operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bus, which was carrying two drivers along with the pilgrims, was returning to Poland from the shrine of the Virgin Mary in Medjugorje, Bosnia, when it veered off a motorway near the town of Mezokeresztes at about 1 a.m., Hungarian police said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vehicle plunged into a ditch and overturned, according to Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Survivor Helena Tluczek, from Lubenia, Poland, described the scene inside the bus as \u201cunimaginable\u201d after the crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to Reuters from her hospital bed, Tluczek said she had been speaking to a friend on the phone when the bus suddenly tipped over and rolled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She suffered broken ribs and injuries to her shoulder and spine, as well as a head injury. Despite her injuries, she managed to pull two people from beneath the wreckage and helped rescue her sister before collapsing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll the seats were ripped out. People were under the seats; everyone was screaming for help,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tluczek said the devastation inside the bus was difficult to comprehend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I looked back, it was like \u2026 Mother of Jesus\u2026 It is not possible; it is unimaginable to see what it looked like inside that bus,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The injured were taken to hospitals in four nearby cities for treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Images from the crash site showed the badly damaged red bus lying on its side in a ditch beside the motorway, with shattered windows, luggage and personal belongings scattered across the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities were investigating the cause of the crash. The bus had been travelling towards the city of Nyiregyhaza when the accident occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
