But somewhere along the way, things went badly wrong and now she is coming home.

The Ghanaian nurse, who previously worked at Tafo Government Hospital in Kumasi, relocated to Canada in search of better opportunities. It is a path many young Ghanaian healthcare workers have taken, drawn by the promise of higher wages, better facilities, and a chance to build a more stable life. It works out for some but for others, the reality is far harder than anyone warned them about. Faustina’s situation came to light through Canada-based content creator @maamepokuahkumasi, who shared details of the nurse’s condition online. According to her, Faustina had been struggling with serious mental health challenges. The post spread fast and within hours, Ghanaians at home and abroad were sharing it, commenting, and asking how they could help. That kind of collective response can feel performative sometimes, likes and reposts that fade as quickly as they appear. But this time, it thankfully translated into real action. Contact was successfully established with Faustina’s family back in Ghana. Plans are now being put in place to bring her home, with arrangements being explored to either have a companion escort her on the journey or for the content creator herself to travel back with her. The goal is to get her home, surround her with people who love her, and make sure she gets the care she needs. Particular credit has been given to Serwaa Broni, whose involvement proved crucial in tracking down and reaching Faustina’s family. It was the kind of intervention that can genuinely change the outcome of a situation like this and many online have acknowledged it.

Faustina’s story has reopened a conversation of what happens to our people when they leave. The narrative around migration is often framed around success: the remittances, the foreign degrees, the social media posts from abroad. What gets spoken about less is the isolation. The pressure to appear fine. The shame of struggling in a place you moved to in order to succeed. The absence of the family, friends and familiar environment that hold a person together when things get difficult. For healthcare workers in particular, the weight can be enormous. Long shifts, unfamiliar systems, and the emotional toll of caring for others, often while quietly falling apart on the inside. Faustina’s story is a reminder that a visa and a plane ticket are not a guarantee of anything. And that the people we celebrate for “making it abroad” sometimes need us to look a little closer. As arrangements for her return are finalised, the hope is that she comes home to the warmth, support, and professional care that will give her the best chance of recovery. Her story deserves more than a viral moment, it deserves a proper ending.

Follow gistme.net for more updates.

Faustina Opoku, a Ghanaian nurse who relocated to Canada from Tafo Government Hospital in Kumasi, is set to return home after suffering serious mental health challenges abroad.

[1

post-6841","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-latest
["GET
