On Friday, March 27, 2026, operatives from the Navy’s Special Boat Squadron (SBS), acting on intelligence, pursued a suspicious canoe attempting to land at Goi, south of Sege in the Greater Accra Region. The suspects on board abandoned the canoe and fled into the bush as soon as they spotted the Navy team. No arrests were made. A search of the canoe revealed 37 sacks of compressed substances believed to be Indian hemp (cannabis). Each sack is estimated to contain about 70 parcels. Other items recovered include an outboard motor, two gallons of premix fuel, and five empty gallons.

The seized canoe and all exhibits have been transported to Tema Fishing Harbour and handed over to the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC). The operation shows that Ghana’s coastal waters are being used to smuggle drugs. This is not new, but it is a persistent problem. Drug traffickers use the sea because it is harder to police than land borders. The coastline is long and the ocean is vast. A small canoe in the dark can slip through undetected. But this time, the Navy was waiting. The fact that the suspects fled suggests they knew they were carrying something illegal. They did not try to talk their way out and that is an admission of guilt. The Navy did not catch them as they escaped, but the drugs remained. These thirty-seven sacks of cannabis will not reach the streets of Ghana, they will be destroyed and that is a win for the Navy. But it is not the end.

The suspects are still out there and they will try again. Drug smuggling does not stop because one shipment was intercepted. The outboard motor recovered suggests this was a well-organized operation. Smugglers do not use expensive equipment for small-time operations. They invest in motors, fuel and boats because they are moving large quantities. The two gallons of premix fuel and five empty gallons also tell a story. The smugglers were prepared for a long journey. They had fuel to get there and back. The Navy’s Special Boat Squadron deserves credit. They acted on intelligence. They positioned themselves. They intercepted the canoe. They secured the drugs and that is good policing. But the fact that the suspects escaped is a problem. Without arrests, there are no prosecutions and without prosecutions, there is no deterrent. The smugglers lost their drugs. They lost their canoe. They lost their motor. But they are still free. They can regroup. The Narcotics Control Commission will now take over. They will analyze the drugs. They will investigate. They will try to trace the network. NACOC has its work cut out. Drug smuggling networks are complex. They involve suppliers, transporters and distributors therefore, catching one canoe is good. But dismantling the network is even better. Ghana’s coastal waters remain a battleground. Drug traffickers will keep trying. The Navy will keep intercepting and the cycle will continue.

Follow Gistme.net for updates on drug enforcement operations.

Ghana Navy’s Special Boat Squadron intercepted 37 sacks of suspected Indian hemp (cannabis)

[1

post-6816","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-latest
["GET
