He described the situation as “disgraceful,” alleging he was “sacked like a goat” by the military and police. This report comes as rescue teams continue to search for worshippers trapped under the church rubble. The building collapsed on Sunday, March 29, 2026. The structure housed a church. Worshippers were inside when it came down and a lot of people are trapped. Some are dead.

Henry Quartey, a former Member of Parliament and former Minister for Greater Accra Region, says he tried to help. He says security forces blocked him. He says they treated him badly. According to Quartey, he was “sacked like a goat” by the military and police. The phrase suggests humiliation and disrespect. Being chased away like an animal. He was angry. He felt he should have been allowed to help. Quartey is not a random bystander. He is a former MP. He served as Greater Accra Regional Minister and has experience in managing crises. If so, why was he blocked?

Security forces at disaster sites have protocols they put in place to control access and prevent overcrowding. To maintain order and to protect rescue operations. But blocking a former regional minister from helping raises questions. Was it necessary? Was it protocol? Or was it personal? Quartey clearly believes it was wrong. He went public with his complaint and used very strong language. He wanted people to know he was mistreated. The building collapse is a tragedy and every minute countsim this rescue operation. In situations like this, emotions are known to run high. People want to help and they want to do something. Anything. For someone like Quartey, being blocked must have been frustrating. He has the experience, the connections and he truly believed he could have helped coordinate. But instead, he was turned away. And he did not take it quietly. But the collapse of the Accra Newtown Experimental School building is still unfolding. Rescue teams are working. The death toll is rising. People are still trapped. This is certainly not the time for political fights or for egos. This is the time to save lives. In a democracy, public officials, especially former ministers, expect a certain level of access and respect. They are used to being in charge and to being listened to. When this doesn’t happen, they feel disrespected, that their authority is being undermined. But disaster management requires clear command structures, discipline and most importantly, following protocols. If everyone with political connections is allowed into a disaster site, chaos follows. Rescue operations get disrupted. People get in the way.So security forces block people, yes, even former ministers.

Quartey’s complaint will likely spark debate. Some will side with him. They will say he should have been allowed to help. They will say security forces overstepped. Others will side with the security forces and maintain that protocols exist for a reason. Quartey should have respected the command structure. For now, the focus should be on the rescue effort, his complaint can be addressed later. The priority is saving lives.

Follow Gistme.net for updates on the Newtown building collapse.

Former MP and Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey claimed he was blocked by security forces while trying to help at the Accra Newtown Experimental School collapse

[1

post-6808","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-latest
["GET
