Akpene Tetteh was a PhD student at Virginia Commonwealth University, nearing completion of her program on an accelerated three-year track. Her research focused on improving health outcomes for adults living with diabetes. She was brilliant and dedicated. On the verge of finishing a doctorate that would have positioned her to make real contributions to global health. And then she was shot.

The shooting happened in Savannah, Georgia. A teenager was arrested the same day. The details are still emerging but the outcome is final. Akpene Tetteh is dead. For her family and friends, the loss is unimaginable. For the academic community at Virginia Commonwealth University, it is devastating. For Ghana, it is another talented citizen lost to gun violence abroad. Colleagues and faculty members described her as brilliant and deeply committed to making a difference. Her research on diabetes was truly focused on helping people. Diabetes disproportionately affects certain communities. The disease requires ongoing management, education and direct access to healthcare. Akpene’s work aimed at improving outcomes for adults living with the disease. Three years into a PhD program is the critical stage where the research is done and the writing is underway. She was almost there. Following her death, the university paid tribute to her academic excellence. In recognition of her contributions, she was posthumously awarded the prestigious Carter G. Woodson Award on February 25, 2026. The honor reflects her commitment to research. But it is hollow. She is not here to receive it, she will never see the impact of her work.

The news of her death has sparked grief in Ghana and among the Ghanaian diaspora in the United States. Many have taken to social media to express shock and pay tribute. Her work in diabetes research was academically significant and socially impactful. Akpene Tetteh was laid to rest on March 28, 2026, in an emotional ceremony attended by family, friends and well-wishers. This heartbreaking incident highlights ongoing concerns about gun violence and safety, particularly affecting students and professionals pursuing opportunities abroad. Ghanaians go to the United States to study. To work. To build better lives. Some never come home. Gun violence in the United States is a crisis. It claims tens of thousands of lives every year. For Akpene’s family, the tragedy is compounded by how close she was to achieving her goal. She had invested years in her education. She had sacrificed. She had worked hard. And just when it was about to pay off, her life was taken. The teenager arrested will face justice. But justice will not bring Akpene back. It will not complete her PhD. It will not allow her to contribute to diabetes research. Akpene Tetteh should have finished her PhD. She should have contributed to diabetes research. She should have had a career and a future. Instead, she is dead. Shot in a country that cannot control its gun violence. Mourned by a family that will never fully recover.

Follow Gistme.net for updates.

Ghanaian PhD student Akpene Tetteh, 37, was shot dead in Savannah, Georgia in early February 2026, with a teenager arrested the same day in connection with the fatal shooting.

[1

post-6803","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-latest
["GET
