A convicted British child rapist is currently on the run in Ghana, triggering an international manhunt involving INTERPOL. The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Dwayne Spence, was sentenced in absentia by a UK court after being found guilty of multiple sexual offences against children aged between 11 and 13. Spence carried out a series of rapes, attempted rapes and sexual assaults over a six-year period before fleeing the United Kingdom ahead of his sentencing hearing. Authorities say the fugitive left the UK in December, traveling first to Morocco before arriving in Ghana, where he is believed to be hiding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case has raised serious concerns about Ghana potentially being used as a safe haven for international fugitives fleeing justice in Europe. UK law enforcement, working alongside INTERPOL, has intensified efforts to locate and apprehend this suspect. INTERPOL typically issues Red Notices to alert member countries about internationally wanted fugitives. This enables coordinated global action to locate and arrest suspects, but the fact that Spence made it from the UK to Morocco to Ghana shows how easy it is for wanted criminals to disappear. Terrorists. Anyone looking to disappear can potentially exploit weak points. That is a problem not just for Ghana but for the entire region. INTERPOL’s involvement at this time is critical. The organization connects law enforcement agencies across borders, shares intelligence and coordinates arrests. But INTERPOL can only do so much. It still has to rely on member countries to act. To monitor their borders and to follow leads. If Ghana’s security agencies are overwhelmed or under-resourced, fugitives will continue to slip through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
