Ghanaian actress and media personality Joselyn Dumas has recounted a distressing experience after scammers allegedly drained her mobile money account, urging the public to remain vigilant against rising cyber fraud.

The popular actress took to Instagram to share details of how fraudsters posed as DSTV representatives and successfully tricked her into giving up sensitive information that allowed them to access her mobile money wallet. According to Dumas, the scammers called her claiming to be from DSTV. They told her that her account had been flagged for irregular activity and needed immediate verification. The call sounded professional. Moreover, the scammers seemed to know specific details about her account, which made the interaction feel legitimate. Without suspecting anything, she followed their instructions and provided information they requested. Within minutes, her mobile money account had been emptied. By the time she realized what had happened, it was too late. Dumas expressed frustration and anger over the incident. She posted about the experience on social media to warn others about the growing sophistication of scammers in Ghana. According to her, these criminals are becoming more creative and convincing, making it harder for people to detect fraud. “Please be careful out there,” she wrote in her Instagram post. “These scammers are getting smarter every day. Don’t give out your information to anyone claiming to be from any company without verifying first.” The warning comes at a time when mobile money fraud has become increasingly common in Ghana. Scammers use various tactics to trick unsuspecting victims into sharing personal details, PIN codes, or OTP numbers. Once they have this information, they can quickly drain accounts before victims have a chance to react. In many cases, scammers impersonate representatives from telecom companies, banks, or service providers like DSTV. They create a sense of urgency, claiming that accounts will be blocked, services will be suspended, or security breaches require immediate action. This pressure often causes people to act without thinking.

Cybersecurity experts have repeatedly warned Ghanaians never to share sensitive information over the phone. Legitimate companies do not call customers to request PIN codes, passwords, or OTP numbers. Furthermore, any call claiming to be from a service provider should be verified by hanging up and calling the company’s official customer service line.Dumas’s experience highlights how even public figures who should be more cautious can fall victim to these scams. If someone with her level of exposure can be tricked, ordinary Ghanaians without the same awareness are even more vulnerable. Mobile network operators and financial service providers have launched campaigns to educate customers about fraud prevention. However, scammers continue to evolve their tactics, finding new ways to exploit people’s trust and lack of awareness. For Dumas, the experience was both financially painful and emotionally frustrating. She used her platform to turn the negative experience into a public service announcement, hoping to prevent others from falling into the same trap.
