Twenty years in the game. Two decades of hits, awards, controversies, and dominance. Most artists would be coasting by now. However, Sarkodie is still hungry.

The rapper recently sat down with KiDi on Apple Music’s Africa Now Radio and opened up about what keeps him motivated after all these years. His answer was simple but revealing. “I’m still chasing something. I feel like I haven’t gotten there yet,” Sarkodie said during the conversation. For someone who has already achieved legendary status in Ghanaian music, that mindset might seem surprising. Nevertheless, it explains why he continues to release music, tour, and push himself creatively. According to Sarkodie, the hunger comes from never feeling fully satisfied with what he has accomplished. Even after winning every major award, selling out shows, and collaborating with international stars, he still believes there is more to achieve. Moreover, that belief drives him to keep working.“I don’t think I’ve reached my peak yet. There’s still so much I want to do,” he added. KiDi, who has watched Sarkodie’s career from a fan’s perspective before becoming a colleague, seemed genuinely curious about how someone stays motivated at that level. After all, Sarkodie has been at the top for so long that many younger artists grew up idolizing him. Yet, he shows no signs of slowing down. During the interview, Sarkodie also touched on the pressure that comes with being a veteran in the industry. People expect you to remain relevant. Fans compare your new work to your old classics. Younger artists are constantly trying to take your spot. All of that can wear on someone. However, Sarkodie seems to thrive on it. “The pressure keeps me sharp,” he said. “If I wasn’t feeling it, I’d probably get comfortable. And comfortable is dangerous in this industry.”

He understands that staying relevant requires constant evolution. You cannot keep making the same music and expect people to care. You have to adapt. You have to experiment. You have to take risks. Over the years, Sarkodie has done exactly that. He has switched up his sound multiple times. He has collaborated with artists from different genres. He has addressed social issues through his music. He has even ventured into business and brand partnerships. All of that stems from a refusal to remain static. KiDi’s interview with Sarkodie provided rare insight into the mind of someone who has dominated Ghanaian hip-hop for two decades. It is easy to assume that someone at Sarkodie’s level has nothing left to prove. However, the conversation made it clear that he still sees himself as someone on a journey, not someone who has arrived. As long as he keeps chasing, Ghanaian music fans will keep listening.
