Between 2023 and 2024, Ghanaian visitors to South Africa jumped by 149 percent. That is not a typo. It is the result of a single policy change that removed one of the biggest barriers to travel between the two countries.

In November 2023, Ghana and South Africa introduced a visa waiver. Since then, thousands of Ghanaians have been boarding flights to Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban without needing to apply for visas or wait for approvals. The impact has been immediate and dramatic. Last week, South African Tourism and Marriott International brought the conversation back to Accra. They hosted a high-level corporate engagement evening at the Accra Marriott Hotel poolside, bringing together tourism leaders, corporate executives, and media personalities to discuss how the partnership can grow even stronger. The event took place on Ghana’s Independence Day, March 6, 2026. Ghanaian media personality Kafui Dey moderated the program. He emphasized the importance of strengthening economic and cultural ties across Africa. The keynote speaker was Mpshiri Setlhare, South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner to Ghana. She did not waste time highlighting the success of the visa waiver policy.

“The numbers tell a powerful story,” she said. “From January to December 2024, visitor numbers from Ghana to South Africa grew by an impressive 149 percent compared with the same period in 2023. This is a clear sign that our collaboration is bearing fruit.” According to Setlhare, this growth is not accidental. Instead, it reflects years of collaboration between the two governments through the Binational Commission framework. This structure brings together leaders and business delegations from both countries to coordinate bilateral agreements across multiple sectors including trade, education, health, and culture.”Ghana is important to South Africa,” she added. “Our relationship goes beyond tourism; it is about building a future where Africa stands united — where we explore each other’s lands, cultures and opportunities.” Before November 2023, Ghanaians needed visas to visit South Africa. The process required applications, documentation, fees, and waiting periods. Many travelers found it frustrating.

Now, the visa waiver has made it easier for Ghanaian business owners to explore partnerships with South African counterparts. The corporate engagement evening included presentations on culinary storytelling, destination marketing, and networking opportunities designed to deepen partnerships. Despite the success, challenges persist. One major issue is the imbalance in travel flows. While thousands of Ghanaians are now visiting South Africa, far fewer South Africans are traveling to Ghana. South African officials have acknowledged this concern and called on Ghana to strengthen its marketing efforts. Safety concerns also remain an issue. Some Ghanaians still worry about crime in South African cities. In response, the South African government has introduced Tourism Safety Monitors who work with police to protect visitors at major tourist sites.

The focus now shifts to making sure Ghanaians take full advantage of the opportunity. For corporate Ghana, this means exploring South Africa as a destination for conferences, training, and business development. For leisure travelers, it means discovering everything from safaris and beaches to vibrant cities and rich cultural heritage. The 149 percent increase in visitors is just the beginning. As both countries continue to strengthen their partnership through the Binational Commission framework and ongoing collaboration, the numbers are likely to keep growing. The poolside gathering at Accra Marriott Hotel marked another step forward in what is becoming one of Africa’s most successful bilateral tourism partnerships.

Follow Gistme.net for more updates on Ghana-South Africa relations and travel opportunities.

Ghanaian visitors to South Africa surged by 149 percent in 2024 after both countries introduced a visa waiver in November 2023.

[1

post-6486","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-latest
["GET
