Thirty minutes. That is all it takes now to register a business in Nigeria.

Nigeria’s Corporate Affairs Commission has officially launched Africa’s first fully Al-powered business registration portal, a technological leap that places the country at the forefront of digital innovation in public service delivery across the continent. The announcement was made by Michael Nwabuto, popularly known as Mike Premium, CAC’s official ambassador and President of the Practitioners of Content Creating, Skit Making, and Influencers Guild of Nigeria. According to Nwabufo, the Al-powered portal represents a complete overhaul of the commission’s existing registration system, eliminating human interference and drastically reducing processing times. “This achievement is the first of its kind in Africa and possibly the world, placing Nigeria at the forefront of digital innovation in public service delivery.” Nwabufo said. The new system uses artificial intelligence to automate critical steps including name reservation, documentation checks, and data validation.

Business owners can now reserve company names as easily as opening an email account, with real-time suggestions and approvals powered by Al. For Nigeria’s estimated 40 million micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, most of which operate informally, this is a game-changer. According to a 2024 PwC report, fewer than 10 percent of Nigerian MSMEs are formally registered. The barriers have always been the same: time, cost, bureaucracy, and the frustration of dealing with manual processes that could take weeks.

The Al portal removes those barriers entirely. CAC Registrar-General Hussaini Ishaq Magaji, speaking at the commission’s 2025 Stakeholders Forum in Port Harcourt, said the introduction of Al in the registration process is a game-changer for doing business in Nigeria.”Our Al-driven portal eliminates human interference, ensuring faster, transparent, and investor-friendly processes. This innovation underscores our commitment to efficiency and confidence in Nigeria’s business environment,” Magaji stated. The commission has also partnered with major fintech platforms including Opay, Palmpay, and Moniepoint to integrate business registration directly into their systems. This means entrepreneurs can register their businesses without ever leaving the fintech apps they already use daily. For Point of Sale operators, who have been a major target of CAC’s formalization drive, this integration makes compliance seamless. The commission has already registered 100,000 PoS operators but is pushing toward a target of 250,000. As part of its aggressive formalization push, CAC has been offering free business registration to encourage compliance. However, Magaji warned that the grace period will not last forever. The commission is working with regulators to impose sanctions on businesses that fail to formalize, particularly in sectors like PoS operations. Since the Al portal was rolled out, CAC has been processing over 10,000 business registrations daily, a massive increase from previous levels. The system operates 24/7, accessible from anywhere in the world, allowing Nigerians in the diaspora to incorporate businesses back home without traveling. The portal also supports post-incorporation compliance, making it easier for businesses to file statutory returns, maintain accurate records, and disclose significant controllers, all requirements that many Nigerian businesses have historically struggled with.

For startups and SMEs, formal registration is not just about compliance. It unlocks access to business banking, loans, government grants, and investor funding. Without a certificate of incorporation, businesses operate in the shadows, unable to access the financial tools needed to scale. The Al-powered portal changes that equation entirely. Now, an entrepreneur with a business idea can go from concept to legally incorporated entity in the time it takes to watch a movie. Nigeria has often been criticized for its slow pace of digital transformation in government services. But with this move, the country has leapfrogged ahead of many developed nations, proving that when the political will exists, Nigeria can lead, not follow. The CAC Al portal is now live and accessible to the public.
