There is no telling what Daniel Bwala expected when he walked into the Al Jazeera studio on Friday, March 6. Probably a standard interview where he would defend President Bola Tinubu’s administration and project the Renewed Hope agenda. What he got instead, was a masterclass in fact-checking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mehdi Hassan, the sharp-tongued anchor of Al Jazeera’s Head to Head program, confronted Bwala with his own past statements, claims Bwala made when he was working for Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign and viciously attacking Tinubu. Bwala’s response to almost every allegation was a flat out denial. “I never said that.”<\/em> He said it repeatedly, confidently and on camera. Hassan referenced a statement Bwala allegedly made in January 2023, accusing Tinubu of creating a militia group to manipulate elections corruptly. “I never said that,” <\/em>Bwala replied. Hassan mentioned Bwala’s claim that Tinubu’s militia tried to kill him. “He doesn’t have a militia. I never said he tried to kill me.<\/em>” Bwala insisted. He brought up Bwala’s statement that he was unable to eat after Tinubu fraudulently rigged the 2023 elections. “I never said that! Where?<\/em>” Bwala shot back, visibly shocked. “What you just said now, I want to put it on record, on my honor, that is not what I said,” <\/em>he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Interviewer did not just make accusations, he brought video clips, old tweets, television appearances, all showing Bwala saying exactly what he had just denied. The footage showed Bwala, in his own words, claiming Tinubu had created a militia. Bwala, on television, saying he could not eat after Tinubu rigged the election. Bwala, clear as day, accusing Tinubu of corruption and violence. Nigerians flooded social media with clips from the interview, comparing Bwala’s denials with his old statements side by side. The phrase “I never said that<\/em>” became an instant meme. Some called it the most embarrassing political interview in Nigerian history. For context, Daniel Bwala was one of the most aggressive spokespeople for Atiku Abubakar during the 2023 presidential campaign. He appeared on television almost daily, attacking Tinubu’s record, his health, his credentials, and his party. He called Tinubu a drug lord. He questioned the legitimacy of his victory. He accused him of being unfit for office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, in November 2024, Bwala was appointed as President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication. The political about-face shocked many Nigerians, but Bwala defended it, saying he was now working for Nigeria, not for Tinubu personally, and that his views on the president had changed. What Friday’s interview exposed, however, was something deeper than political opportunism. It revealed a willingness to deny documented reality, to rewrite history in real-time, and to bet that people would not fact-check. But Mehdi Hassan did. And Nigerians did. And now Daniel Bwala is trending for all the wrong reasons. The interview was supposed to be about defending Tinubu’s administration. Instead, it became a viral moment about credibility, or the lack of it. You can change your political allegiance, You can switch parties. You can even defend the person you once attacked. But you cannot erase the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
