For Big Brother Naija season 7 winner Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, better known as Phyna, being named Blessing felt like the universe’s idea of irony. In an emotional interview with BEYONDWITHEZINNE, the reality TV star opened up about her difficult childhood and why she grew to despise the name her parents gave her. According to Phyna, her upbringing was marked by poverty, emotional neglect, and a constant struggle for validation that made the name Blessing feel hollow. “The name given to me by my parents is Blessing, the reason for me hating that name was because I don’t see any sense of blessing in my life. In October 2022, Phyna emerged as the winner of Big Brother Naija season 7, taking home \u20a6100 million in prizes and becoming a household name across Nigeria. The same girl who felt like she had to beg for love was now being celebrated by millions. But fame did not erase the wounds of her past. In November 2024, Phyna made headlines again when she publicly dropped her family surname, Otabor, and declared that she was done seeking validation from people who had never valued her. She also alluded to feeling like an orphan, despite having living parents.Her father, Felix Otabor, had previously gone public in 2023, accusing her of abandoning the family after winning Big Brother Naija. He claimed she had promised to replace his old ambulance cars but never followed through. Phyna fired back, saying her parents had always made her feel unwanted and that she refused to be guilt-tripped into a relationship built on obligation rather than love. The public back-and-forth exposed deep fractures in the Otabor family.
