Just like that, Dickson Ovat Agbor became the first Cross River State lawmaker in recent memory to be suspended indefinitely over allegations of domestic violence.

The decision came down on Thursday, March 5, during a plenary session where emotions ran high and the moral authority of the legislature was put squarely on the line. Agbor, who represents Obubra I State Constituency, had been under intense public scrutiny following reports that he physically assaulted his wife, Glory Agbor. The alleged incident, said to have occurred on February 28 at the Assembly quarters, sparked outrage after journalist Agba Jalingo broke the story and images of the injuries circulated online. The motion for his suspension was moved by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Bassey Asuquo. “This is behavior unbecoming of a lawmaker and contrary to the ethical standards expected of members of the legislative arm of government,” Etta said. “We must ensure that members conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the values and responsibilities entrusted to us by the people.” After deliberations, the House voted unanimously to place Agbor on indefinite suspension from all legislative activities. An ad hoc committee was also set up to investigate the matter and report back to the House for further action. Speaker Elvert Ayambem, addressing the House after the vote, made it clear that the Assembly would not tolerate conduct that brings the institution into disrepute. Governor Bassey Otu and his wife, Eyoanwan Otu, had earlier weighed in on the matter, publicly criticizing Agbor’s alleged actions and calling them irresponsible. The First Lady, reportedly furious over what was described as habitual violence, had been vocal about the incident even before the Assembly took action. One report claimed that Speaker Ayambem himself had to drive to Agbor’s residence late one night just weeks earlier to rescue Glory and take her to the hospital. But then came the twist.

Hours after the suspension, Glory Agbor issued a statement calling for privacy and claiming that the matter had been resolved within the family. She said people were trying to paint her family in a bad light and insisted that she and her husband were at peace with each other.”There is no doubt that some people have tried to paint the name of my family in a bad light, but my husband and I are at peace with each other,” she said. “Even though issues arose, we have been able to amicably resolve our differences. Please leave my family alone.” She went further, apologizing to her husband and announcing her withdrawal from the Legislators Wives Association, suggesting she felt misled by other lawmakers’ wives, including the Speaker’s wife. Her statement has only complicated an already messy situation. Some see it as a woman trying to protect her husband and salvage her family’s reputation. Others see it as a troubling pattern seen too often in cases of domestic violence, where victims recant under pressure or out of fear. Regardless of which is true, it is clear is that the Cross River State House of Assembly has drawn a line. The suspension stands, and the investigation will proceed. Agbor will not return to legislative duties until the committee completes its work and the House decides what happens next. This could most likely mark a turning point in how elected officials are held accountable for their private conduct. Or it could just be another headline that fades with time. It all depends on what the Assembly does next.

Stay tuned to Gistme.net for more updates

Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended lawmaker Dickson Agbor indefinitely over alleged domestic violence involving his wife.

[1

post-6427","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-latest
["GET
