The kind that go viral, get screenshotted and resurface at the most inconvenient times.

For years, Omokri was one of President Bola Tinubu’s most vocal and relentless critics. He staged protests against Tinubu in London. He questioned his academic credentials. He called him a “known drug lord.” He said working with Tinubu was “not in his DNA.” He has expressed this emphatically on television. And yet, here we are.

Omokri’s shift toward the Tinubu camp did not happen overnight, but it accelerated dramatically when he accepted a nomination as ambassador-designate under the Tinubu administration in November 2025. He addressed the apparent contradiction on Channels Television, clarifying that he was not working “for Tinubu” but “for Nigeria”, a distinction that many Nigerians found creative. He also acknowledged that his position on the President had changed, saying he now believes Tinubu is delivering the kind of results the PDP had long promised. “My position on President Bola Tinubu has changed. I believe he is the best thing for Nigeria,” he said. Now, Omokri has gone a step further. In a widely shared piece published on March 3, 2026, he publicly declared his support for Seyi Tinubu’s City Boy Movement, the political youth mobilisation platform that serves as the engine for President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign.

For those just catching up, the City Boy Movement was founded in 2022 to support Tinubu’s presidential ambition and has since refused to dissolve. It now operates across all 774 local government areas in Nigeria, focused on political education, youth engagement, and keeping the Tinubu 2027 bid alive. Its grand patron is Seyi Tinubu. In recent weeks, the movement has made aggressive inroads into the South-East, recruiting prominent figures like Obi Cubana as South-East Zonal Coordinator, a move that has generated intense controversy in the region. Omokri’s endorsement of the movement is significant precisely because of who he used to be. It signals to the political class and to ordinary Nigerians watching that the Tinubu machine is pulling in voices from across the ideological spectrum ahead of 2027.

Reactions have ranged from amusement to genuine disgust. Many Nigerians have dug up Omokri’s old quotes and videos and placed them side by side with his current positions, a comparison that does not reflect well on consistency. Others, however, argue that political evolution is not inherently shameful, pointing out that Omokri has at least offered explanations for his change of stance, even if those explanations have not satisfied everyone. What everyone agrees on is that with 2027 approaching, the political alignments forming right now will define the battlefield. And Reno Omokri, for better or worse, has made his position very clear.

Stay locked to Gistme.net for the latest political gist.

He called Tinubu a ‘known drug lord.’ He protested against him in London.
