For one SS3 student at Command Secondary School, Iyana Ipaja, that assumption reportedly fell apart in a very violent way. Maryiane Okonkwo, a final-year secondary school student, was allegedly brutally beaten on school premises by the school’s bursar, identified as Farouk Ohieari. The incident, which has been circulating online and reported by EduTimes Africa, has sparked calls for urgent intervention from concerned Nigerians who say the response from the school has only made things worse. According to reports, the assault took place on school grounds.

Following the incident, Maryiane’s mother reportedly arrived at the school to take her daughter for proper medical attention and was allegedly turned away. Sources claim the school refused to release the student, reportedly out of fear that the incident would become public knowledge. It has also been alleged that rather than face accountability, school authorities are considering quietly transferring the bursar involved, a move critics are calling a cover-up, not a consequence. Sources further allege that this may not be the first such incident at the school, but that previous cases were buried due to the school’s military affiliation, with some parents choosing silence over conflict. Command Secondary Schools are administered under the Nigerian Army Education Corps. This military structure, while offering a disciplined learning environment for many students, can also create a culture of fear and silence around complaints. When a parent or student is seen as taking on a military institution, the perceived power imbalance is enormous. This is precisely why advocates are pressing for outside intervention. For families of civilian students who pay significantly higher fees to attend these schools, the expectation of basic safety and accountability should not be negotiable, regardless of who runs the institution. No official statement has been released by Command Secondary School, Iyana Ipaja, the Nigerian Army, or the Lagos State Government. Maryiane’s condition and whether she has since received proper medical attention remain unclear.

What we do know is that a teenage girl days away from completing her secondary school education allegedly left a school building in worse shape than she entered it. And the institution allegedly responsible appears, at least so far, more focused on managing the story than addressing the harm.Nigerians are watching. And this time, the silence may be harder to maintain.

Follow Gistme.net for updates as this story develops.

An SS3 student allegedly beaten by a school bursar.
