According to classmates, he even stayed back briefly to submit an assignment for his Research Methods course before beginning the journey back. It was a routine end to a school day that unfortunately turned into the last moments of his life. According to a SaharaReporters investigation, Sultan who was enrolled in YABATECH’s distance learning programme was allegedly struck by stray bullets fired by soldiers who had been deployed to the WAEC bus stop area to quell a reported cult clash.

The area is normally busy with students, traders, and commuters. Witnesses described a scene of complete chaos. People scattered and ran for cover as gunshots rang out. In a video seen by SaharaReporters, Sultan was drenched in blood while bystanders desperately pressed clothing against his wounds, praying he would hold on long enough.

He did not.

Sultan was rushed to the Military Hospital in Yaba, where doctors reportedly attempted chest surgery in a last-ditch effort to save him. He did not survive. His family, friends, and classmates have been left devastated. The cruelty of this story is sharpened by one detail: Sultan was not even a regular on-campus student. In YABATECH’s distance learning programme, physical attendance is limited. Students show up for exams and the brief lecture periods preceding them and then they go home. He was not supposed to be there long. He was not caught up in anything. He was just a young man walking home after an exam, in the wrong place at the wrong time, in a city where that can cost you your life. Classmates who spoke to SaharaReporters described him as calm, respectful, and focused, a student just trying to complete his education. As of the time of this report, the Nigerian Army has not released an official statement on the incident. The circumstances of the deployment and the specific events that led to Sultan’s death have not been formally investigated, at least not publicly.

Nigerians online are not waiting patiently. The calls for accountability have been immediate and loud. For many, this story cuts to the heart of a recurring and deeply painful reality that in Lagos, simply being outside can be fatal, and that those deployed to restore order sometimes contribute to the disorder.Balogun Sultan went to school that day. He deserved to come home.

Gistme.net will continue to follow this story as it develops.

He finished his exam.
