President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to fulfill two key campaign promises, demonstrating his commitment to the Muslim community in Ghana. During the National Muslim Prayers at the National Mosque in Kanda, Accra, on Friday, January 10, 2025, Mahama declared that his government will introduce an additional public holiday for Eid al-Fitr celebrations.

This move aims to make the Muslim festive period more widely recognized in Ghana. The President assured the Muslim community that plans to amend the Holidays Act will be made once Parliament resumes, with the change expected to take effect this year.

In another significant development, Mahama reaffirmed his government’s efforts to make the Hajj pilgrimage more accessible and affordable for Ghanaian Muslims.

He announced the formation of a five-member Hajj task force, tasked with negotiating arrangements to drastically reduce Hajj fares. This move is expected to enable more Muslims to participate in the pilgrimage.

Mahama had previously promised to reduce Hajj fares during his 2024 election campaign, citing the current fare of GH¢75,000 as prohibitively expensive.

With these announcements, the President is demonstrating his commitment to delivering on his campaign promises and supporting the Muslim community in Ghana.
