According to Ghana Health Service, 50% of Ghanaian women age 20-49 are obese.

There’s a rapid increase in body weight and size of women due to the food they eat and inability for them to exercise. Most women lately, don’t want to walk to burn fat and calories but they resort to public transport even in a close distance destination.

Many also take in sugary and oily foods while others eat late at night. In Africa, most people see gaining weight as a sign of good living, and you are even hailed, praised and asked to “SHOW YOUR SECRET”, but the reality is, this is a serious health concern.

Here are some tips to help you lose body fat:

1. Eat a balanced diet: Focus on consuming whole, unprocessed foods that are rich in nutrients. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains in your meals. Avoid sugary and processed foods as much as possible.

2. Control portion sizes: Be mindful of your portion sizes and avoid overeating. Use smaller plates and bowls to help control your portions.

3. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water helps to boost your metabolism and keep you feeling full, reducing the chances of overeating.

4. Include regular exercise: Engage in both cardiovascular exercises (such as running, cycling, or swimming) and strength training exercises (such as weightlifting or body-weight exercises). Cardio exercises help burn calories, while strength training helps build muscle, which in turn increases your metabolism.

5. Increase physical activity: Find ways to be more active throughout the day, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking or cycling instead of driving short distances, or incorporating physical activities you enjoy, like dancing or hiking.

6. Get enough sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. Lack of sleep can disrupt your hormone levels, leading to increased appetite and cravings for unhealthy foods.

7. Reduce stress: Chronic stress can lead to weight gain and hinder fat loss. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as practicing relaxation techniques, exercising, or engaging in hobbies you enjoy.

8. Be consistent: Losing body fat takes time and consistency. Stay committed to your healthy eating and exercise routine, and be patient with the results. Remember, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian before making any significant changes to your diet or exercise routine. They can provide personalized guidance based on your individual needs and health conditions.

There’s a worrying development of women getting heavier lately and this sign isn’t a good omen to the country’s health system.
